Our Language Arts series covers everything from Grammar to Writing. The Grammar portion will teach the students about sentences and how to write them properly. We will learn about Common and Proper Nouns, and their singular and plural forms. We wil also learn about possessive nouns. We will then spend time learning about verbs. This will include action verbs and their present, past and future tenses. After that we will introduce main, helping and linking verbs, which includes irregular verbs and contractions. Moving along we explore pronouns, adjectives and adverbs.
While we are learning about grammar we will also learn about writing. Their writing could include comparative, persuasive, explanatory, narrative and expository writing.
We are going to use the
6 Traits of Writing
to teach our students how to become better writers. The 6 Traits are defined as follows:
1. Ideas: the meaning and development of the message
2. Organization: the internal structure of the writing
3. Voice: the tone of the piece, the personal stamp that the writer brings to it
4. Word Choice: the specific vocabulary the writer uses to convey meaning
5. Conventions: the mechanical correctness of the piece
6. Presentation: the overall appearance of the work
We will work on each of these traits seperately and as a whole, depending on where the student is currently in their writing. It will be an ongoing and year long process.
